IoT Terminal Extends Access
to Parking Infrastructure with Smartphone
CHALLENGE
Existing access control systems usually require keys, chip cards or instant paper tickets to allow users accessing parking infrastructure. Key or chip card handling require effort for pick-up the physical keys in advance and return, cards get lost and hand-over to others require a face-2-face based exchange. Nowadays, access control systems need to be more flexible and intelligent. Booking access in advance (online reservation), dynamic pricing according user profiles (loyalty systems), or shared payment (bonus systems, promotions) are just a subset of required features. COVID-19 measures even require (in some regions) tracking of name, date and location in a specific area at a specific time.
Solution
The missing link between the physical access control system like the door lock, a lift gate, and the user as well as the cloud can be closed with our product IoT Terminal. Installed in the existing infrastructure, it provides either a physical interfaces, or in this use case a communication interface to the parking backend system and a Bluetooth communication link to the users smartphone nearby to grant access if the user has a valid parking ticket. The ethernet interface is also communicating with a cloud platform to maintain and manage all installed IoT Terminals remotely.

Our CISC IoT terminal enables smart access by seamless integration of the end-user’s mobile device combined with a cloud-based user access management for the “Speedy Park” at Venice Airport in Italy.
Simple Extension of
Access Infrastructure
The picture on the right side shows the extension of the access control system for the two lanes entrance and exit. They have been mounted outside the existing housing for warranty reasons. Two external Bluetooth antennas have been used for beam shaping which is necessary to cover the entry and exit drive path only. The two IoT Terminals are mounted at the bottom together with the power supply and the electrical fuse.
