5 Reasons International Standard-Based Measurement Methods Shine

Products must comply with applicable standards

Imagine you plug in your mobile device for charging and the USB plug will not fit and even deliver not the power in the way suitable for the device. Imagine a WIFI situation where your mobile device and the hotspot don´t clarify themselves to provide you with data. To ensure that things work as we are used to it, products must comply with applicable standards. We have the same expectations of reliability when it comes to RAIN RFID technology. A tagged product has to work in different circumstances otherwise it will lead to higher expenditure of time, missed items and typically financial losses.

For product functionality, measurement methods are one important element to check on the characteristics of the products and to learn where improvements are required. There are several standardization bodies like ISO, ETSI, and GSI who have worked out standards for measurement methods. It´s important to emphasize the top reasons why only measurement methods compliant with standards deliver reliable results.

  1. Make it comparable
Test results are easier understandable and comparable if there is a common set of parameters defined. International Standards are addressing a common language of RAIN RFID test methods to have the confidence that products are safe, reliable and of good quality.
  2. Make things work
Find and fix reader, tag and system issues within seconds instead of days. If measurement results rely on a proprietary test method you run the risk that your product will not perform properly under specific conditions. Failures lead to higher costs and disadvantages in the market and make you and your customers dissatisfied.
  3. Ensure the right quality
RAIN RFID tags are products that can react sensitively to different environments. To test the products within specific stress conditions a compliance pre-testing for different protocols should be provided. GS1 is developing standards for tagged-item performance protocol (TIPP) to meet requirements for specific products in specific environments.
  4. Increase performance
Understanding the key characteristics of a RAIN RFID tag is key to meet performance benchmarks in different applications and environments. The right test methods deliver results to better understand how to place, track and manage your tags.
  5. Enhance your credibility
Developing reliable and high-quality products secures customer confidence and increases credibility as a trusted partner. Only products that are tested based on measurement methods compliant with internationally developed and approved standards by recognized standardization bodies are credible for now and future.

Latest ISO Updates

Just recently two important performance standards updates have been approved in ISO to harmonize test methods globally and allow multiple test labs, vendors and other market players to perform the same tests for comparable results:

  • ISO/IEC 18046-2 for reader performance testing, including among others reader receiver sensitivity tests
  • ISO/IEC 18046-3 for tag performance testing, including among others tag minimum operating power and a clearly defined method for tag backscatter power.

Applicable for Europe, the European Commission started major efforts in order to ensure wise RF spectrum use by requiring RF systems to fulfill certain performance requirements. This will be addressed in the new ETSI EN 302 208 that is currently in the balloting process.

At CISC, we have a deep knowledge of standardization as we are an active member of organizations like ETSI, ISO/IEC, and GS1® EPCglobal™. This and more than 15 years of experience in RAIN RFID+NFC testing make us the right partner for reliable products.
